Leaving in Three-Quarter Time

(Beth DeSombre)
Leaving In Three-Quarter Time

Another night passes, I spend it alone
He hurries back home with the sunrise
He says that he missed the last bus, but I know
He’s practicing saying goodbye

One-two-three back again
One-two-three gone
He sets the rhythm that’s played to my song
He says he’s staying but I see the signs
He’s leaving in three-quarter time

I hoped I’d found someone to have and to hold
He brought blossoms and buds when love started
But things wilt and wither when new love grows old
And if you don’t tend it, it dies

One-two-three back again
One-two-three gone
He sets the rhythm that’s played to my song
He says he’s staying but I see the signs
He’s leaving in three-quarter time

I try to figure out where we went wrong
But nothing I do makes a difference
He’ll linger forever between here and gone
If I sit and wait for goodbye

One-two-three back again
One-two-three gone
I’ll make a new rhythm to play to my song
And if he’s not staying I’m sure I’ll be fine
Move forward in three-quarter time
