The Friends That I Need

(Beth DeSombre)
The Friends That I Need

I was trusting
Took the forthright, white knight, upright view
But despite that
I've been looked through, lied to, miscued, too
When people around me are telling me lies
Their words insubstantial as dust
Instead of despairing I know that it's wise
To seek out the ones I can trust

Here's to the people who say what they mean
Who don't keep you guessing, with motives unseen
You trust what they tell you; they've nothing to hide
Whatever they show you will match what's inside

These are the people I'm seeking
These are the friends that I need
These are the people I'm seeking
These are the friends that I need

I was loyal
Set a steadfast, at last, hold fast pace
I instead found
Just a wholesale, blackmail, turn tail race
Where once I thought others were constant and kind
I've learned that assumption's absurd
Despite disappointment I know I can find
The ones who are true to their word

Here's to the people who mean what they say
Live up to their promises; don't run away
Stand with you in good times and hold you in bad
They're steady and calm in a world that's gone mad

These are the people I’m seeking
These are the friends that I need
These are the people I’m seeking
These are the friends that I need

It's exhausting
In this hard-paced, straight-laced rat-race world
And I've done it
Played the fast-ball tough-call cost-all girl
I could get ahead if I'd lie steal or cheat
But that's not how I want to play
And now that I know there's no need to compete
I'll find those who make their own way

Here's to the ones who bring joy to this place
They build a community we can embrace
They love what they do and they do what they love
Prioritize meaning; shine light from above

These are the people I'm seeking
These are the friends that I need
These are the people I'm seeking
These are the friends that I need
