The Best Art
(Beth DeSombre)
The Best Art
Near where 9th Street crosses 2nd
And the hipsters hurry by
On an old upended bucket
Sits a painter, taking time
Not sure where his next meal comes from
There's so much he can't control
But unhurried inspiration
Is what matters if your goal
Is the best art
The truest eye
The deepest heart
And a reason why
Some artists look for value
In the fanciest supplies
Buy the finest inks from China
Sable brushes, custom dyes
But if you have a good idea
And the courage to proceed
Magic marker, chalk, and pencil
Are sufficient; all you need
For the best art
Is the truest eye
The deepest heart
And a reason why
Buy him a coffee he'll tell you the story of all of the places he’s been
Listen awhile and he'll show you the beauty he conjures with brushes and pens
He's used to people passing
Who won't look him in the eye
But still he sits there painting
Down-and-out but dignified
We're so quick to render judgment
Sorting treasure from debris
But a masterpiece is waiting
For those wise enough to see
The best art
The truest eye
The deepest heart
And a reason why
The best art
The truest eye
The deepest heart
And a reason why
