Moved Out

(Beth DeSombre)
Moved Out

There’s a broken wooden rocking chair by the kitchen table
The breeze still blows unfettered through the torn screen door
Near the deadbolt and the doorbell someone’s tacked a scrap of paper
That says that she don’t live here anymore

On a November day
Watching the sky turn gray
No one knows where she’s gone
Moved out, moved up, moved on
Moved out, moved up, moved on

When he left her, last July, she taped her fractured heart together
Faced her solitary burden singing songs she ought to know
But the chair creaked with her sorrow and the house refused to shield her
It was autumn when she knew she had to go

On a November day
Watching the sky turn gray
No one knows where she’s gone
Moved out, moved up, moved on
Moved out, moved up, moved on

Traveling on a new road
Helps to lighten her load

Now the sun shines in the kitchen where the bread is freshly baking
Through a partly open window you can hear a fiddle play
And the walkway winds its way around the newly planted maple
She thinks that maybe here is where she’ll stay

This is her choice today
Nothing stands in her way
Finding where she belongs
Moved out, moved up, moved on
Moved out, moved up, moved on
Moved out, moved up, moved on
